What Are Dental Sealants?

Indentations in the top of the back teeth typically hold onto more germs and plaque, meaning they are more at risk for ending up with decay. Dental sealants, a primary part of preventive dentistry, help safeguard the molars from cavities caused by decay. These thin protective barriers are made of a tooth-colored material that is brushed onto the top surfaces of molar or premolar teeth. When they’re bonded, sealants work to protect these teeth and provide a more even exterior, which is easier to maintain. Dental sealants placed at Savannah Smiles Dental don’t just help stop cavities, but they may also lessen your need for fillings or other procedures in the future. Speak with Dr. Cassandra Montemayor at our Schertz, TX facility to see if you can benefit from dental sealants.

What Is the Sealant Process?

Before we begin, Dr. Montemayor will have to look at the teeth to find out if dental sealants will be the right solution for you. To prepare the teeth for sealants, we will polish them to get rid of any buildup, food particles, and bacteria from the crevices. The enamel is then dried, and a thin sheet of sealant product will be placed precisely into the fissures with a small brush. An advanced curing light is then positioned over the tooth, which will harden the sealant casting in roughly 10 – 20 seconds. Once the sealants are set, we will assess your bite for an even alignment and give you instructions on how to efficiently care for your sealants.
