What Are Tooth-Colored Fillings?

Dental cavities are a common problem that develops when bacteria erodes your tooth enamel. In the past, cavities were treated with an amalgam material, which is a mixture of different metals, such as mercury or silver. Now we know that metal fillings don’t adhere fully to the teeth, and the mercury may be dangerous to your overall health. At Savannah Smiles Dental in Schertz, TX, Dr. Cassandra Montemayor offers tooth-colored fillings made with composite resin to fill cavities and protect the tooth, as well as to replace any metal fillings you might already have as a safer and more attractive alternative.

What Can I Expect from Tooth-Colored Fillings?

Receiving a tooth-colored filling is typically an easy process. The treatment area will be numbed with a local anesthetic to minimize your discomfort. Other forms of sedation may be considered if you have any fears or anxieties to keep you relaxed during the procedure. As soon as you are prepared, the affected enamel is treated with a special drill that Dr. Montemayor will choose based on the location of the cavity in the tooth and the level of decay. Once the enamel is cleared away and the tooth is disinfected, the area will be filled with the composite material and set with a special light. Afterward, the filling will be polished so it matches your other teeth.
