What Are Dental Crowns?

Generally, teeth that have suffered a fair amount of damage or tooth decay can be strengthened using dental crowns. Our established Schertz, TX dental practice proudly provides crown restorations to patients to help protect and cover the surface area of an individual tooth while restoring a more natural size and shape. Dental crowns are customized to blend evenly with neighboring teeth and can be utilized to treat teeth that are fractured, decayed, malformed, or damaged in some other way. Crowns can also be merged into a unit to function as a bridge or bonded to individual implants to replace a missing tooth. Set up a treatment consultation with Dr. Cassandra Montemayor at Savannah Smiles Dental to find out if you may benefit from a custom dental crown.

Who is a Candidate for Dental Crowns?

A consultation with Dr. Montemayor can help determine if a dental crown is the best restoration option for your needs. Patients in need of dental crowns have teeth that are broken, cracked, severely decayed, or worn down from use. Additionally, dental crowns may be used to cover and protect a tooth following a root canal as an effective way to protect the remaining portion of a tooth. During a consultation, Savannah Smiles Dental will review your medical and dental history, evaluate the affected tooth, and take digital X-rays to ensure that you are an appropriate candidate for a crown.

What Can I Expect from Dental Crowns?

Same-day crowns are currently available for most cases. In other instances at the initial visit, one of our qualified dental practitioners will numb the treatment area and might offer sedation services to increase your comfort level if desired. Once the affected tooth structure is removed, an impression of the prepared tooth will be captured and used to create your custom restoration. A temporary restoration will be worn on your treated tooth to maintain normal oral function and a natural look over the period of time your customized dental crown is being made. You will need to schedule a follow-up visit at Savannah Smiles Dental about 7 – 14 days afterward to have the temporary crown taken off and the custom crown adhered to your tooth or dental implant.
